The group of scientists behind Viogard has since the 1980s developed strategies and methods for the analysis of molecules involved in the interaction between different marine organisms. Chemical defence substances in marine sponges were studied with an approach from fundamental research, but also to explore their biotechnical and pharmaceutical potential.

Certain dipeptides, so called barretines, which both in laboratory and field test have been shown to block fouling from sea acorn (one of the most difficult fouling organisms) have been isolated and identified from the marine sponge Geodia Baretti. Our hypothesis was that the barretines have potential within the framework of marine anti-fouling paints and form an environmental friendly alternative to today’s toxic anti-fouling paints.

After completing this original preparatory work, we have advanced further with the analysis and development of yet further substance candidates.
